Caretta Initial Updates

Before first use, please install operating system update and NGH update. These updates are necessary for correct function.

Caretta Operating System Update

Operating system updates are served over-the-air and are available via a simple on-screen button click (similar to your smartphone). 

How to update:

1. Connect to the Internet (WiFi is recommended – massive file will be downloaded). 

2. Go to the Settings – System – Additional system updates and click Download. The update will install automatically. The installation will continue on the background so you do not need to stay on the installation progress screen (however, do NOT press the “Cancle” button – it would terminate the process :-)). The update process takes about 30 minutes (depending on your Internet connection). The process is completed by rebooting (restarting Caretta) – that needs to be triggered manually. If you left the screen with the update progress window, come back to Additional system updates menu after some time to check, if the update completed. If it did, you will be offered an option to reboot for the update to be applied – confirm that choice.

What is changed: 

  • Overall performance increase
  • GNSS performance optimization and offline AGPS implementation
  • New booting graphics
  • Homescreen layout and behavior. 
  • Charging indicator for 12V power input

New Homescreen layout will not override the previous configuration or the configuration you may have already applied yourself. If you want to see how it would look out of the box, the default Homescreen launcher cached files need to wiped (Settings – Apps – See all – search for Quickstep (top right corner) – Storage/Cache – Clear storage.

NGH (Next-gen HUD) update

What is changed: 

  • Firmware update for the Caretta Cradle – this is really important for correct function
  • Implementation of BMW Multicontroller (aka Wonderwheel)

It is also essential to update the pre-installed version of NGH. 

1. Connect to the Internet

2. Log in to your Play Store account (if you did not during the initial Caretta setup wizard)

3. Search for NGH – update (the version needs to be 1.20 and up. It is possible that NGH was already updated on the background, so don’t worry if no update is offered by the Play Store).

4. Go to NGH Settings – Caretta setup and update firmware (scroll to the bottom of the page). This ensures firmware update of both the microcontroller inside Caretta and also inside the Cradle. The update is vital for correct Cradle functionality (charging and data exchange with the bike if connected to BMW or OBD socket).
